By now, you’ve heard about the literal horror story that is DNAinfo and Gothamist’s undignified end, and there’s plenty to read on the net this week about what the loss of these two New York City news sites (and sister sites like DCist and LAist) means for local journalism.
For a more DC-centric one, this piece from BuzzFeed offers a poignant look at the digital roots of local news sites like the Gothamist network from back in the day, and this Columbia Journalism Review one is more NYC-focused, but exhaustive in terms of the mostly $$-related factors that’s made digital local news such a death row situation today. In short, the internet broke a lot of things...but at least we got gifs?
