links for optimizing your $$ and networking
Two quick links for today: First, all current and future podcast peeps should be checking Alex Laughlin’s anonymous salary sharing project for audio producers here, because remember people, we are trying to make optimal content AND optimal $$$$.
Secondly, should you discover that you’re doing neither (or simply trying to level up on the career game), this Ask A Boss column from earlier this month at The Cut is required reading for anyone trying to partake in the dark art of informational interviews. Tl;dr, they’re intimidating and time-consuming and like ~instead of getting coffee can we request iced matcha lattes??~ but **breaking news** can be engineered to suck visibly less for all parties involved.
One suggestion I’d add that’s been helpful/successful from my lil newb experience on both sides of informational interviews: If you’re the one approaching/asking someone out for coffee, be proactive & suggest a few concrete times/dates/places for the person to choose from — it’s so nice for them to be able to hit respond and say “yes” quickly without the back-and-forth belaboring over a Gcal. And if the person you wanna network with seems p. busy, offer to simply stop by their office with coffee in tow because nothing warms the cold professional heart like some personal Seamless-level nicety.
So go forth & network responsibly, Deezers! Have faith and maintain a good coffee:knowledge exchange ratio out there.
Like Deez Links?? Forward to a medium iced matcha latte w/almond milk and honey, uh, just FYI.
