Crazy representative asians!
A link with a bit of personal context for y’all today:
So a big part of my job at BuzzFeed — where I edit and adapt international content for a US audience — is swapping out images of foreign celebrities for American ones. For example, there’ll be a lineup of six dude celebs to choose in a quiz about your star sign, or a bunch of celebrity couples in a quiz where you find out which ones “most accurately embody” you & your bae.
More often, I’ll sub in American celebrities that are extra ~relevant~ now — like Chadwick Boseman, Amy Schumer, Hasan Minhaj. You get the gist. Making sure a single post in the larger BuzzFeed universe is moderately representative is important to me, because where else do ya start with creating more representative media??
But it always stumps me (and embarrasses me) when I look at the resulting lineup and try to think of an Asian voice I can add to make the lineup more representative, and my mind draws a blank. If you asked me to name an Asian woman celebrity, I’d say, well, ok, Mindy Kaling, and oh, that one lady from Grey’s Anatomy. And you guys. I’m fucking Asian. It’s a travesty.
Anyway, this is all a long-winded way to say that the trailer for Crazy Rich Asians, dropped today, and it struck a weird nerve as I watched Constance Wu (and Henry Golding) living it up in what looks like a very great rom-com that treats Asianness not as an exotic mystery culture or a punchline or a fun sidekick. I’m so into it. And I can’t wait to add Wu & Golding on every adapted post that comes across my desk. Get ready, you guys. Which breakout actor in the new age of Asian-American film are you?
