you should be reading this newsletter on race & power
After watching nearly every outlet, brand, and friend’s roommate’s dog’s IG account attempt to cover the BLM protests and carry out conversations about racial injustice in the mainstream, I’m curious to see how things will wane in the coming weeks. There’ll probably be a big push for Juneteenth on Friday — the brands sure love themselves a tentpole event, after all — but then what? How will publications who’ve been giving a lot of lip service about ~engaging in dialogue~ actually do it, and how will the rest of us find ways to keep the conversation (and action!) going into the long-term?
These are the reasons why I’ve been recommending Fortune magazine’s raceAhead newsletter to everyone I know lately: it’s a newsletter from Ellen McGirt that was originally launched in 2016 to curate daily links and commentary around “culture and diversity in corporate America,” which at first might sound a little dry in that LinkedIn panel kind of way, but it’s since morphed into the best thing I read every day about how race and power intersect.
Since none of us are turning into civil rights attorneys overnight, raceAhead’s newsletter format is honestly perfect, because you’re basically signing yourself up for a constant, super accessible drip of info about how race plays into everything from politics and philanthropy to whatever the hell is going on at [insert media company target of the day here] to the entertainment industry and beyond. Plus, there are often haikus involved! AND while Fortune has a p. tight paywall, raceAhead is totally free. Here’s a sample if you’re curious, and you can subscribe here. (lol but this is not an ad! Promise that I just really love this one. CC: decision-makers at Fortune, please invest in this valuable resource please!!)
