wishing you plenty of peeled fruit this month
As a second-generation Chinese American who only realized rather late in life that NO ONE eats grapefruit the way we do (white people have a special razor spoon for it apparently and this is never not hilarious to me), this Refinery29 essay, Love In The Shape Of Cut Fruit, made me sit up in clear recognition of this extremely specific love language and the perfect literary metaphor it offers. “Life is filled with bitter and hard things,” writes Connie Wang. “When you extract pits, piths, and peels, fruit becomes an accessible and reliable source of pure sweetness, only softness.”
Definitely excited to see how the rest of R29’s series turns out, along with all the much-needed Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month content for May that, at the very least, will help this community feel more visible, less like a liability.
