Why True/False should be on your woke little hipster doc-head radar
So the best part* of attending this year’s True/False Film Fest** was most certainly the shit ton of lady directors’ films on display -- as we noted yesterday, parity in representation is liiiiike, not? at all? the media’s strong suit, and documentary filmmaking is no exception.
Of the 45ish films/shorts screened last weekend, there were at least*** 19 female directors, but it felt even more ~equal~ personally bc 5 of the 8 I ended up seeing had ladies at the helm. If you’re in that kind of I just want to watch a documentary trailer mood that I suppose we all get from time to time as we wax our yuppie hipster mustaches, here are 4 that I super recommend, all by some killer lady directors:
Sonita - the story of an 18-year-old Afghan illegal immigrant who escapes being a child bride and raps about it, as one does.
Sherpa - a gorgeous doc that will make you basically an expert on the cultural politics of Mt. Everest tourism.
Weiner - click the link or Google search at your own risk. Hilarious film on Anthony Weiner’s douchery and more importantly, Huma Abedin’s side-eye.
The Prison in 12 Landscapes - this one explores how prison, as an employer/structure/institution/experience, touches us all.
Happy trailer-ing!
* Aside from being reunited w/$4 triple wells that tell you everything you need to know about going to college in central Missouri.
** If you’re unfamiliar, True/False is this fabulous, fabulous film festival hosted in Columbia, Missouri, for the past 13 years. It’s waaaay better than Sundance, according to one director who said this to her mom over the phone while yours truly was sort of eavesdropping nearby.
*** I say “at least” because some of the films were ~secret screenings~ and they said the CIA would find us if we so much as peeped about ‘em. Hence why I can’t link you to Secret Screening Scarlet, even though it was AH.MAZE.ING.
