what that pot date essay & russian doll have in common
Let Jen Doll’s latest Longreads essay, Edible Complex, serve as both a friendly pre-4/20 warning to know how to apportion one’s pot chocolate, and also as an actually very fresh and earnest ~dating in 2019~ tale with all of the situational hilarity of a good Sex & The City episode.
The grueling Search For The One; the ensuing messiness of revealing your most vulnerable, panicked self to someone; and the fervent conclusion that, at the end of the day, basic human kindness and connection are the only real prize — these themes from Doll’s essay are also ones that we found, whilst streppy and couch-bound at home earlier this week, in “Russian Doll,” that Natasha Lyonne-driven Netflix show everyone’s been raving about. So yep, you’ll have to count us as one of the bandwagoners who won’t be getting over it any time soon.
If you haven’t given “Russian Doll” a go yet, we recommend sticking with it at least through episode 3 (and they’re the short kind), and letting this sharply dressed puzzle box of a show prod you into some moody, existential thoughts and your best spring goth self. Let her out!!!
