As far as longreads that are equal parts heartwarming & heart-breaking go, I’m going to be thinking about this New Yorker magazine piece about Japan’s Rent-A-Family industry for a long time, not in the least for the fascinating ideas it surfaces about emotional labor and human bonding. Very Black Mirror and Westworld related stuff, if you’re into that, and 10000% worth your time to read.
