Wait why are we not talking about this Marianne Williamson detail
Finally finished Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s feature on Marianne Williamson and um excusez moi but how are we NOT discussing what is absolutely the hands down WILDEST FACT re: the 2020 Democratic field that is buried a little more than halfway in this piece:
[Cory Booker] had memorized a quote of hers that he said is often falsely attributed to Nelson Mandela: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” That quote is from Williamson’s 1992 book, “A Return to Love,” Booker said.
Almost thought we were hallucinating on the train when we read this, but Snopes confirms it and now we are EXTREMELY perturbed by the number of people/institutions/Disney Channel Original Movies we’ve witnessed misquoting this in our lifetime. Did you guys know this?? Is this common knowledge?? How was this not the entire lede of the story????????
(Also like….can we just pause and meditate wholly on the LAYERS OF SEXISM that this kind of large scale misattribution entailed????? Just…shudders, man. Also part 2: if Williamson were like a big tall male reverend/spiritual leader….would we even be talking about her like this?????)
