unfortunately i too now love the show that all the dads love
Lest you guys think Deez Links is all dunk and no fun now, today I’m just writing a fangirly letter of recommendation for the latest TV show that’s served as my personal escapist refuge from our national reality: PEAKY BLINDERS.
If you’ve already gulped down Bridgerton and are looking for a good period TV show that crosses off a lot of the same boxes — power hungry families, British accents, honorable gangsters/rakes with life-changing cheekbones, slow-burn sexual tension, a Netflix-budget-sized amount of horses on set — it is time for you to join me in appreciation for what amounts to a stirring five-season showcase of Cillian Murphy’s extremely good face.
Does Peaky Blinders have anything particularly nuanced to say about race, feminism, or Irish republicanism? Eh, no. It’s pretty much straightforward Doing Crimes plotlines paired with a stellar rock & roll soundtrack and the fantastically chic tweed three-piece suits everyone wears while stalking around dark alleys and smoke-filled pubs. Tom Hardy joins the fun in season 2! And the overall resulting effect is more than enough to scratch any old timey anglophile itch. Trailer for Season 1 here if you want to help confirm that it’s not just me and the quarantine goggles……….
