The Mad Max edition
If you didn’t catch Best Picture nominee “Mad Max: Fury Road” in theaters last May and also didn’t happen to watch it for Galentine’s Day last night whilst face-deep in homemade frosting, despair not, for ye still have two whole weeks until Oscar night to do so.
On the list of cool things that happened in the media 2015, this movie belongs right up there with like, freaking Apple News, considering its “orgasm for your eyes”-esque cinematography, a facemeltingly minimal use of CGI, and most importantly, its gloriously unceremonious feminism.
The thinkpieces are plentiful, but the quick hits I recommend are: HitFix’s “7 ways ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ sublimely subverts movie sexism,” The Verge’s “Misogynists are totally right to be mad at Mad Max,” this fetal amputee’s reaction from Mary Sue and (memes count as cultural criticism, yes?), this Tumblr.
Also, Vice interviewed director George Miller in the first installment of their VICE Talks Film series, which is worth checking out because Vice integrated this clickable little menu inside the actual video, so you can decide what parts of the interview to skip. Cool idea, especially if you’re asking them crazy millennials to commit to a whole 23-minute video.
Other cool Max Max things: the fact that director George Miller flew in Eve Ensler (of The Vagina Monologues cred) to coach the cast on the reality of abuse, that Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron’s stunt doubles got married, and an interview with the Doof Warrior. This very unbiased WaPo take on the Oscars race is also a lot of fun.
Thanks for reading, and to my Galentine’s Day gals, thanks for letting me convince you why we needed to watch this over Magic Mike last night. (Next week, though?)
