tbh Lady Showrunners would be a great band name
Happy International Women’s Day!* Today’s links are for celebrating/examining/sighing heavily into a margarita pitcher re: women’s representation + parity in three fields of the media:
Global affairs reporting: “The World According to Men,” from The Atlantic, whose headline pretty much says it all/is applicable to everything ever. On the plus side, lots of name dropping of both historical and current female global correspondents, just in time for #wcw.
Public relations: “Public relations agencies are dominated by women. So why are all their leaders men?” asks Quartz, which is THE REALEST QUESTION EVER considering like a million trillion percent* of all PR jobs are held by women and yet only 30 percent of global agencies are run by them???
TV: On a more positive note, the whole ~more women are running TV shows~ thing and the ~golden age of TV~ thing happening at the same time = coincidence? I think not! Entertainment Weekly did a nice roundup of the top lady showrunners back in December, and it’s worth another read/need an IWD-themed reason to justify tonight’s binge.
Anyway, the general takeaway on patriarchal power structures in the media industry being:
*Known in some circles as International Formation Day.
**Ok so actually it's like 85 percent, but does it not FEEL like a million trillion?
