So that ol’ “media elite” perception? here's one reason it exists
In case you need to be reminded that mostly none of this is fair and so much of media hiring is extremely elitist, student journalists from a program run by the Asian Amerian Journalists Association recently surveyed seven major news organizations and found that 65% of their intern class in 2018 came from a tiny group of colleges that only make up 13% of U.S. four-year colleges! (TBD how many don’t have a college education — we’d wager almost none??)
And while this survey is drawing from a pretty small sample size, knowing which big titles were asked about this = sobering but not terrifically shocking, given our own rather intimate knowledge of the fact that, up until a few years ago, the owner of one very national magazine used to regularly call up Ivy League student papers and ask for direct recommendations for one extremely prestigious internship program... but that’s some deez goss for another time. 🙃
