seriously? you really don't have a newsletter yet?
The latest in Reasons You/Your Media Brand Should Be Investing In Newsletters: this startup Substack raised $2 million to do what you all probably already have the tools to do — create an awesome newsletter subscription product.
There’s a few reasons why newsletters make sense to invest in right now:
A) the general public has shown a willingness to pay for subscription news products (see: The New York Times’ entire 3.5 million strong digital subscriber base)
B) that whole ad landscape will only get shadier as we trust Facebook less and less, and
C) platforms like Mailchimp or TinyLetter are ridiculously easy to use and offer a not-overwhelming number of metrics to track. Substack is different in that it allows you to directly charge for a subscription.
Need inspiration? I like (The Toast co-founder) Nicole Cliffe’s Substack newsletter, Nicole Knows About Skin, which clearly embodies the idea of monetizing niche content/expertise as a subscription product. Sign up, and you get feminist skincare recommendations and articles written in a straightforward way for $5 a month (but you can also sample/lurk as a free reader too, should you resist the siren call of more skincare content).
