scads & scads of good quotes here
This Q&A with Jim Nelson on the end of his EIC gig at GQ is just a magnificent buffet of quotables to memorize while you rehearse for your Longform interview in 10 years (oh...other people don’t do that??), from the perfectly Priestly-level haughty statement “I am almost congenitally unsatisfied and always looking for the next thing,” to the most compelling case for using the phrase “scads and scads” to be ever made.
There’s a lot of other good, behind-the-scenes stuff on how Nelson’s vision for GQ came to be (including how Caity Weaver profiles almost didn’t ever happen!), but let this anecdote about an early meeting with S.I. Newhouse (the late Condé Nast legendary publisher) inspire you to do something ~interesting~ today:
“I remember S.I. telling me at one point, ‘Well, you have interesting ideas, not all of which you have thought through the repercussions of, either for advertisers or readers. But they’re interesting ideas.’”
