Respect the long game
In the age of the million mph daily news cycle, you gotta respect anyone playing the long game when it comes to documenting history right now. An excellent example: former Wall Street expert and now nonprofit advocate Amy Siskind, who’s been chronicling all of the democratic/governmental norms slowly but surely changing under the Trump admin, with one almighty list, under the hope that *pause to shudder here* we’re able to “trace our way back” one day.
Also, ICYMI: a gorgeous set of photo essays on the lives of queer women from Vogue in celebration of Pride Month — though my girl Jess points out that they/most of us could stand a refresher on not confusing the word “lesbian” with “queer,” and vice versa. She gave me a brilliant #explainer via text message, which I’ll quote here:
“Think of it like an umbrella. Queer is the umbrella term and the terms lesbian, gay, bisexual and pan sexual all fall under it. When you use the term queer, you are being more inclusive. When you say lesbian, you are excluding those who don't solely identify as homosexual.”
S/o to Jess for this excellent lesson, and send me your thoughts on how we can all speak more accurately about all communities everywhere.
