Wanted to round up a few resources today for everyone who’s looking for work / support right now. Go forth and investigate!
Study Hall — Every single freelancer should be subscribed to Study Hall right now! Depending on the subscription tier, you get a weekly newsletter of job openings / blurbs from editors looking for very specific pitches, a weekly digest of media news/analysis access to the listserve of Basically Everyone In Media, pitch guides + resources galore, and a big Slack channel. It’s about $1-$18/month depending on your subscription.
Laura Olin’s newsletter, Cup of Ambition, sends out well-curated monthly listings of extremely cool jobs in advocacy, media, and tech. If you sign up for $7/month, you get ‘em every week!
If you want to make $$ off a newsletter or start one to give your network a way to support you stat, Substack is obviously the place to be. Their blog has a bunch of resources for getting set up, they’re giving out grants to support independent writers, and if you’re serious about monetizing your ‘letter, this presentation from Emily Atkin walks you through how to do it, step by step.
Email consultant Dan Oshinsky, formerly of BuzzFeed & The New Yorker, is opening up **free** office hours in April for news orgs, non-profits, or anyone covering coronavirus who want to talk about coronavirus email strategy. Email him at dan@inboxcollective.com with a blurb on who you are, who you’re working with, and what you wanna discuss.
Finally, NYT staffers put together a freelancer fund for “freelancers and other members of the Times community who have experienced financial hardship due to the virus” and giving out micro-grants of $100 starting April 16, so apply NOW!!
