on The New Yorker tote as the humblebrag (humblebag??) of our time

I’m howling at this extremely self awareness-inducing MarketWatch story that confirms the ultimate truth: The New Yorker tote bag as status symbol is a total thing, and none of us are being very original about it. At least, not until that second edition tote gets released (don't worry guys I reserved mine two weeks ago), further tearing the literati social strata into old New Yorker readers vs. new New Yorker readers, possibly sparking the next Great Gatsby-esque class war.
The ultimate winner here, of course, is whichever Conde Nast marketing genius decided that carrying a bag is the new "Oh me? I just finished a 20,000-word essay on Eritrean politics on the train, let me tell you all about it" humblebrag.
H/t to Celia for this v. important link. I'll be reporting on the new tote test drive soonly.
Like Deez Links? Forward to the friend who’s too embarrassed to wear her/his tote in public but it’s deeeeffinitely hanging prominently in their apartment.
