Yeah, so, for a magazine that made exploitatively voyeuristic photo essays on all things “exotic” into a household staple, NatGeo is on par to win the Self Awareness Award in media lately for actually reckoning with its straight up problematic past.
Tl;dr, with the release of a special edition “Race Issue” this month, the 130-year-old mag legit hired a historian to go through their archives and confirm what anyone who’s side-eyed the misuse of the word “uncivilized” has known: shit was racist.
And call us crazy, but we feeeeeeel like this kind of boldass move wouldn’t happen if someone like Susan Goldberg — the title’s first woman (and first Jewish) editor in its history — wasn’t in charge, yea?
