#neverstopharping
As March/Women’s History Month comes to a close, we at Deez Links would like to review a few key reasons why celebrating women in + of the media is v. v. important and not something to stop harping about any time soon:
Women in this industry have definitely not achieved parity in the work force.
Women in this industry are not getting paid equally.
Women in the media are getting fucking shafted when it comes to the ugliness of the internet.
This is some gloomy ass shit, but here are four ways you, a woke and noble-intentioned Deez Links reader, can make a ~difference:~
^^us tryna defeat patriarchy within the industry
Support media dedicated to amplifying women’s voices in the media (esp. the ones actually founded by women!) Like The Riveter,* Femsplain and The Toast.
Read work by women! I recommend “Newswomen: 25 Years of Front-Page Journalism,” as a v. glam and easy way to severely elevate your commute reading game.
Keep up with the movers and shakers and slayers: The Cohort is a wonderful newsletter 100% dedicated to highlighting women kicking ass in the digital media.
If you yourself are a woman in the media, consider mentoring young’uns! A few students from my alma mater started a Mizzou Women in the Media mentorship program; you can do the same!
Send me more ideas if you have ‘em. Otherwise, live long, prosper and hug a female journalist today.
*Disclaimer: I used to work for The Riveter, bc they are badass motherfuckin’ visionaries.
