media moms & dads bout to be outta here
As this generation of digital-first media outlets ages up, so does their mostly millennial talent — throwing the question of “How do we deal with babies tho” on the table. And while we’ve reinvented storytelling for the social age, made new revenue streams appear out of thin air and trawled the earth to bring you livestreamed exploding watermelons, it’s TBD whether we can also change the way we think about journalism as a profession for working parents — mothers, especially.
Which is why the latest Nieman Report: Where Are the Mothers? should be a legally mandated read for media leadership everywhere. Because tl;dr, if you don’t figure this shit out so we can have our little journo babies and then heal our uteruses and then come back and be productive, we (men included!) are OUTTA HERE — a less than ideal situation for your company & the industry, considering 50% of employees at digital native news outlets are women now (insert chef’s kiss here), and women make up about 2/3 of graduates in journalism programs.
Also, please please especially read this if you’re a dude in media — one of the best insights from this report is how much of a difference that supportive males can make. Take your parental leave! Talk about your kids! Embrace the dad(dy?) lifestyle.
