mall music nostalgia is a thing now, I guess
To say that Jia Tolentino is the voice of our generation wouldn’t be an actual stretch if you consider the arc of many of her latest pieces, which involves 1) unpacking some quirky corner of millennial/digital culture that probably has the olds at The New Yorker scratching their heads, and then 2) Tying it all up with an insightful flourish that’s both poignant and poetic about how we’re all lost in this cRaZy digital age, but we’ll be okay, probz.
She’s done this wonderfully with the skincare craze and emo nostalgia; now give her latest, The Overwhelming Emotion of Hearing Toto’s “Africa” Remixed to Sound Like It’s Playing in an Empty Mall, a read.
It will appease your curiosity if you, too, have been like ???why is everyone suddenly obsessed with “Africa” by Toto lately??? but also want to fall down a YouTube rabbit hole about sound editing and the enduring relationship between music, time and place. Enjoy!
