Like just maybe you are not the expert here??
If you’re reading The Atlantic’s latest summer cover story, When Children Say They’re Trans, you should also read Jezebel’s critique of the piece, What’s Jesse Singal’s Fucking Deal, which pointedly (albeit a little haughtily) drags the thinkpiece outlet for a litany of flubs that show just how complicated its topic really is.
Tl;dr, it’s one thing to give a huge platform to someone whose work covering a minority population is loathed by many actual members of said population, but it’s also another thing to invest so much time and $$ to cover such a complex topic from a pretty tired angle.
“Why is this the only detransition narrative that most media seems interested in covering?” asks Jezebel writer Harron Walker. We’d venture to guess that at the end of the day, it’s a bit of guileless cluelessness. Like, if you, a forward-thinking publication, want to talk about the finer nuances of the extremely diverse trans experience, maaaAaAaaybe a cis dude (and a largely cis editorial staff) should not be the sole authoritative voice here??
