like is your business model "news for Barbie" or....??
Newsletter news: TheSkimm just got an $8 million investment from 21st Century Fox to start moving into the video space. Verrrrry interesting, and something to keep an eye on.
I’m personally curious to see how TheSkimm will translate their pop culture/Millennial gal ethos into video, especially since, to be quite honest, their logo itself is sort of stupid:
Like, ayyo Skimm, your revenue strategy is on point, but any way y’all can think of a way to enter 2016 and represent a young female professional reading the news without doing it LITERALLY, or maybe without like, the requisite size 0 waist and stilettos??? Just wondering.
It’s also a development that should come as no surprise if you’ve been following media newsletters’ growth in recent timez. I.e. Lena Dunham’s newsletter, Lenny, teamed up with Hearst last fall, and the great Today In Tabs, before it went on hiatus, was adopted by Fast Company last year.
Kind of looks like newsletters’ ability to draw a niche, dedicated audience might only really be financially viable if you work with a big publication that can help you increase your reach/make the $$$.
(So, uh, any big, generous, VC-funded media publications out there looking to syndicate Deez Links, please feel have ur people get in touch with my people).
