let women eat on camera, k thx
You can’t do shit as a woman of color in pop culture without your “otherness” becoming the focal point of conversation, but The Eater’s reflection on Samin Nosrat, the Iranian-American chef and author behind Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, is a smart must-read if you’re going to watch the new Netflix series based on her best-selling cookbook (ftr, the book is worth an investment alone if you’re into watercolor infographics that are as soothing as they are useful).
By putting Nosrat visually front and center in the Netflix, writer Jenny G. Zhang points out, this difference from the usual TV food/cooking show optics is clear: there’ll be no swashbuckling Bourdaining or cute Chrissy Teigening here — just Nosrat enjoying herself, some roast chicken, and the company of some cool grannies. Nothing and no one gets overly exoticized, and as a result, it’s pretty revelatory fare.
Bonus link: Eater must have an informal ~politics of eating on camera~ beat, because they also talked about the “radical banality” of women eating on camera in Ocean’s 8.
