interview more nurses!!!
Keepin it short today because I’m on vacation! (well, staycation) but I thought this piece on why health care journalists should interview more nurses, from the Shorenstein Center’s Journalist’s Resource, was suuuper interesting — based on interviews with ten health journalists, two major reasons why you don’t see nurses as sources a lot is because hospital PR departments usually offer doctors as sources, and also apparently journalists “often don’t really know what nurses do”!! Which seems crazy to me?
Anyway, even if your beat is nowhere near health care, it’s a good reminder to always be interrogating your own built-in notions of authority, what truly makes an “expert” source, and what stories you’re missing if you’re strictly shooting for quotes from the top of the food chain.
