I guess "let's go consume some VR content" doesn't have the same ring to it...
On this National Coffee Day, what I really want is some kind of oral history of the “let’s grab coffee” phenomena, and how it became the ubiquitous verbiage for a network/date/v. platonic meetup. Is it because we are literally all vegetative states running on caffeine? Or does it have to do with this weird social complex of wanting to appear equal parts productive + chill?
Just thinking about cafes in general, especially with this cool Quartz piece on VR cafes in China. Because as much as the media is drooling over VR and all that sexy storytelling/monetization potential, the primary barrier to entry rn is that like, no one actually has a VR headset, except like rich uncles and that friend who works in Silicon Valley. So this idea of the cafe to lower that barrier is interesting — and maybe it’s the movie theaters who should really be jumping on this trend??
(And fear not, publishers! If you can’t swing VR, maybe vimages is more in your budget?)
Also, you should absolutely read this Ad Age piece, “Why Don't More Women Run Media Companies?” although I’d personally amend it to: “How the patriarchy & institutional barriers make it hard to own a uterus and the CEO title.” Cause like, I think the why is pretty obvi here.
