How I Wrote This Book: Eddie Huang’s “Come Undone”
“I really love being a writer. I think it is a curse for the people you’re in relationship with.”
For the latest installment of How I Wrote This Book, a Deez Links Q&A series on craft and creativity, we have the inimitable Eddie Huang on to talk about his debut novel, Come Undone, which arrives June 16. The book is fun, open-hearted, and so essentially Eddie; I think I can count on one hand the number of novels I’ve ever read about a “toxic guy” falling in love that actually earns its pathos, and this is one of them.
It’s not a hyperbole to say that Eddie is quite possibly the one multi-hyphenate to rule them all, which is why I’ve been dying to know what motivated him to take up the novel form amid his career as a bestselling memoirist, successful New York restauranteur, iconic host of Huang’s World on ViceTV, plus podcaster and newsletter writer. We had a Zoom sesh late last week to talk about the book, his literary faves Ottessa/Junot/Sally, and the fact that he wrote Come Undone effectively in five days. Five days!!
