Heroes or nah?
Quick poll: Are we really in this new golden age of #longform-interactive-VR-enabled-beta-tested-socially-optimized-deep-investigative-dives-that could-change-the-world-and-liiike-democracy-as-a-concept journalism? The New York Times’ new ad campaign, launching at the Oscars this Sunday, certainly seems to be going that whole ~doing the Lord’s work~ route, with its new (and first ever) ad, “The Truth.”
On the other hand, there is the whole world out there beyond media Twitter (or so they say) of people who seems to feel less than enthused — and even some on the inside are feelin’ kinda skeptical. Take Deadspin’s Hamilton Nolan hot take that sums it up with an appropriate level of side-eye: “Chill with the ‘journalists are heroes’ thing.”
Nolan particularly seems to take issue with the whole sending-pizzas-to-newsrooms tradition, which seems kind of petty, but maybe it’s bc he pictures it going down like this??
