Free editing tips for the Times
Now this is cool: Brooklyn artist Alexandra Bell is producing a public art series called “Counternarratives,” where she prints out huge, blown-up reproductions of actual New York Times stories and annotates them to show the very real biases and stereotypes at work even at the vaunted Grey Lady. Then, she “redesigns” the alternative, and posts the two versions up side-by-side in subways and street corners. It’s like a thorough copy edit for Not Being Racist — NYT (and all other publications), please be taking a lot of notes ‘cause this is some actual free knowledge on how to be better.
