Ford every [revenue] stream...
New revenue streams are the new black, aka, a media company’s gotta do what a media company’s gotta do.
The latest: Wired is launching a $4,000/year membership program that basically gets you in on a ~tech influencers & startups club~ and the Boston Globe gets funding for a classical music critic from nonprofits. The underlying theme: media outlets (especially newspapers) have to start thinking of themselves not only as a public service/information provider — they’ve also got some lucrative assets in terms of access, connections, prestige, and credibility. The only problem now: how do you convince people to pony up for it??
One last link: 730DC is a daily newsletter for #theyouths in DC (if you are one of said youths and live in the DMV area, you should def. sign up!) that I hella loved for its local coverage & sassy tone. And what’s super cool is that they recently published a lil’ piece about their renewed commitment to hire writers and stuff that mirror the DC population they serve (aka, not just white dudes). Kudos, 730DC! Hip local news at its finest.
