escapism for all

When we first heard that California Sunday and Pop-Up Magazine were teaming up to do an “Escape” issue this fall, we were expecting the usual (god, we’re so spoiled for good visuals) lush photos of exotic locales, aspirational destinations, and maybe a misty waterfall or two — but the **actual** cover story takes the route far less bougie: instead, it’s a joint photo essay about how the residents of the three most populous cities in the world “get away” from the humdrum: in basement libraries, in the office bathroom, in memories of long-ago nights spent on a porch. The photographs are all the more alluring, and just like that, our definition of “escape” has expanded exponentially.
