did you guys know her name was supposed to be "orpah" winfrey??
Electable for 2020 or not, we’re riding high on the original modern media mogul Oprah wave over here, and my colleague Matt brought this year-old treasure from the BossFeed culture desk to my attention: How Oprah Got Her Acting Groove Back.
Two particularly meaningful grafs (especially re: the potential mother lode of political capital that this particular ~media mogul for office~ scenario could be mining) about the evolution of Oprah’s identity in the national consciousness:
“As a TV host, Oprah’s job was a peculiar one. For many white Americans, she was a sort of remote “interesting black friend” – they could look to her to talk about weight loss, discuss the regular, petty (or serious) dramas of families, or have an impromptu book club meeting about the latest nationwide bestseller...
“The second stage of her career is calculated and precise, and at least from the outside, seems to represent a woman keen to break free of the still-too-narrow strictures placed on black women in and out of Hollywood. She is no longer just America’s therapist – instead she is (almost) just another citizen, only one with uncommon power and reach, as well as a good deal of cultural discernment.”
While there’s a clear argument to be made that politicians shouldn’t be celebrities and vice versa, it’s getting harder to envision how the post-Trump political landscape is supposed to just casually & immediately swing back to the ol’ policy & pocket protectors type of candidacies, ya feel? At least, not while us medias are all still doin’ everything for ~the clicks~ on our end. 🤔 🤔
