Dangerous(ly underpaid) women
ARRUGHHHHHHKIHLKJDSFSFAJLSDJJJJJ like, idk about you, but every time a new article comes out on the pay gap that’s alive and well in OUR OWN GODDAMN “PROGRESSIVE” “FORWARD THINKING” “NOBLE” industry, it makes me burn with the rage of a thousand underpaid (so probably female) pitbulls. Like, come on, journalism. If we can’t do it, who the f will???
^this, but a woman, and 1000x more lightning
If you haven’t seen it yet, I’m referring to The Washington Post’s report today that found, on average, full-time women at Dow Jones properties make 87 cents for every dollar paid to full-time men. Which is, yes, a tiny bit better than the national average for the wage gap (79 cents), but like?? Not that much better???
Anyway, there’s a bunch more ulcer-worthy stats in there about the gap across the media industry outside of the Dow Jones universe, but in closing for the week, I’ll leave you with this: “The Exact Words to Use When Negotiating Salary,” to have and to hold (and to bookmark) for when your day to negotiate that paper comes. It’s not media-specific or entirely new by any means but hey, unfair compensation practices aren’t, either.
Bonus link: In other news, Ariana Grande’s new single dropped today!!! Which I am going to make minimally media-related by pointing out that her aunt Judy was a longtime Washington reporter, Pulitzer nominee and first Italian-American female president of the National Press Club. Ok. Now I’m done. Promise.
