CJR SAW YOUR READ RECEIPTS, GUYS
When it comes to shade-throwing media orgs, one does not think of Columbia Journalism Review automatically, but this newsroom policy analysis is not to be consumed without popcorn: What we found when we asked newsrooms about sexual harassment.
The tl;dr is that CJR sent out a batch of surveys last month to a bunch of media outlets to learn about how they handle claims of sexual misconduct — and NO SINGLE COMPANY GOT BACK TO THEM. Individual journalists and freelancers, yes. But no official company line on anything.
Here’s a particularly roastful line:
“We were disappointed when not a single one of the 149 newsrooms we sent surveys to submitted a response—not even publications at the center of recent allegations, or those that have criticized the handling of allegations, or those who have done crucial reporting on sexual harassment and assault in journalism and other industries.”
And then, omfg you guys, they went and published a list of every company THAT OPENED THE SURVEY EMAIL. YOU CAN SCROLL THROUGH ALL THE NAMES. IT’S ALL RIGHT THERE. YOU WILL RECOGNIZE MANY OUTLETS.
I’m honestly over here vicariously applying aloe — this is an incredible third degree burn, you guys. Regina George and also everyone who's ever screenshot a read receipt would be proud.
