calendars = the new newsletters?
You’re not to be blamed if you missed when theSkimm came out with a $3/month subscription calendar app waaaaay back in 2016, but it looks like more ~serious~ news orgs are looking at, yes, calendars as the “next great online publishing tool,” according to this Poynter piece .
Two great highlighted examples: The Minneapolis Star Tribune using calendar invites to share timely local election stories, and also, the NYT’s space calendar (bc of course they have a space cal). Both are smart, creative ways to reimagine the delivery of time-sensitive content — in the same vein that newsletters and push notifications work — but like, getting actually invited to put stuff on your audience’s personal Gcals? It’s a whole new level of reader-relationship intimacy. Hot!
