bots in Cleveland

The whole Tay-Kanye-Kim drama’s got nothing on the RNC, if if Stephen Colbert’s little stage hijack is any indication (Ah, to be young again, back when the Republican candidacy was entertaining in that genius Hunger Games parody type way).
But if you’re not in Cleveland to follow the shitstorm yourself, BuzzFeed’s released a Facebook Messenger bot to keep readers informed throughout the week.
This BuzzBot is a noteworthy foray into the latest news-messaging-bot trend — you’ll notice it functions and looks a lot like the Quartz messaging app, released earlier this year — but it’s interestingly using Facebook as a platform, instead of building its own.
Both bots offer a perfect example of the sort of red pill/blue pill situation going on with publishers right now: when it comes to attracting and engaging with readers, should they try to reach them using essentially rented space on popular third party platforms (i.e. Facebook), or should publishers go the ol’ house party route, invest in a keg and hope people show up on their own??
