ayyo NYT, the ~truth is~ you have some things to get in order

Here’s hoping this lights up the 'net as much as that Modern Love column/Notebook sequal did last week: “The Declining Fortunes of Women at The Times,” from the NYT public editor, Liz Spayd.
In it, she absolutely skewers the still v. present, v. problematic gender disparity at the ~world’s best newspaper~ — with a few astounding tidbits that I gotta highlight for you (major h/t to the brilliant Amy Weiss-Meyer).
75% of the obituary pages last year were about men.
The much-heralded chief architects of the BFD 2020 report were all male.
Times women are literally fantasizing about how a story might actually end up “if no man touched it through the editing chain.”
And the most mic-drop nugget getting at the heart of the problem with disparity:
“Being the only woman in a meeting can produce a feeling of having walked into the men’s room. But more significantly a gender, or racial, imbalance changes what’s considered news. When you combine the two variables — race and gender — you’re no longer representing the audience you’re trying to reach.”
Lest we forget, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Here’s hoping more publications (am looking v. meaningfully at all of you legacy peeps) do a lil’ thinking on all of this.
