an Ariana-themed letter I wish I didn't have to send
In some unperturbed parallel universe far far away, it doesn’t take a heartbreaking tragedy to more fully appreciate the greater significance & cultural relevance of Sparkly Things Girls Like*, but at the very least, may the recent spate of Ariana Grande thinkpieces guide us into making a little more sense of the way we talk about women today.
I especially recommend two of ours from The Atlantic: Sophie Gilbert’s The Horror of an Attack Targeting Young Women and Spencer Kornhaber’s The Ideology of an Ariana Grande Concert, which both speak on the modern feminine power that drives Grande’s work and which has now become targeted from extremists from more than one side.
(Also, if you need, there's an okay NYT piece here that neatly sums up her career trajectory, in case you’ve missed the requisite lecture from yours truly…).
