a list of journalism job openings for Posties & anyone looking
Turns out that Twitter is still good for something...
The brutal layoffs at WaPo and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are terrible for about 230 billion reasons, and even supposing you’re not into quantifying the hundreds of people whose livelihoods are at stake, think of the loss of institutional knowledge and mentorship that will result from eliminating so many employees from a news company (and for many, possibly the industry itself).
It is absolutely a loss to journalism as a whole when an established outlet gets cut off at the knees; glory be to the ones who figure out how to Substack/Beehiiv/Patreon their way into independence, sure, but I think we all know that’s not how most bread-and-butter news gets made. The most reliable economic unit of news production can’t only be a buzzy party of one. We are very much losing the ancient texts — or at least the traditional, weird and creative ways that news has been gathered for decades and how that knowledge gets handed down in an otherwise totally unprofessionalized industry. Nothing made this loss more clear than the NYT story on Martin Weil, a journalist laid off at WaPo after 60 years, which offers an idea of how much more on-the-ground experience and ingenuity is stored up in one veteran’s pinky than the entire senior management experiences in a lifetime fiddling with org charts.
