a 2019 media version of "Would You Rather" where no one not named Jim/Bryan wins
It’s a dismal day in digital media when you can’t tell who’s worse off: New Gawker, under the questionable leadership of Bustle Boi Bryan, or Old Gawker, AKA G/O Media, under the also questionable leadership of Jim Spanfeller & His Ex-Forbes Frat, especially after reading this farewell post, The Adults In The Room, by departing Deadspin editor Megan Greenwell from last week.
But, as Greenwell (who’ll be heading to WIRED) explains, both Gawkers — as well as countless digital media sites, local newspapers, and even Pacific Standard as of late — are essentially dealing with the same problem: leadership by corporatey (and mostly white) men who all seem weirdly here to make a quick buck — as if the whole problem of monetizing journalism hasn’t been a tumultuous, centuries-old dilemma — and wholly disinterested in what data/their own employees/general industry trends have to say about their hare-brained ideas.
But hey, who needs proven case studies or the cold, hard numbers when all ur ol’ buddies are like lol let’s just do it and be legends???
