4 good & quick royal interview links
It looks like it’s still a bit early for any super deep dives (I’m waiting for a great labor story to be made of all this so let me know if you see one!) but here are my favorite Meghan & Harry interview takes so far:
Doreen St. Felix giving us an excellent read on the interview as a piece of television and on Oprah’s “spectacle of reflective listening”
Also Margaret Sullivan on Oprah’s interviewing brilliance: Everyone on Twitter Sunday night was like “teach this in J-schools!” but tbh save your tuition and just read this article, which expounds on the underrated technique of letting silence work for you and “relentlessly circling back to emotional or newsmaking comments like a heat-seeking missile.”
Vox nailed the mental health angle with a Q&A with Elana Newman, psychology professor and research director at the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma (which trains journalists on how to report about trauma, mental illness, and conflict): “I mean, if a princess asked for help, and couldn’t get help, what does this say about accessing mental health care?” is a great quote, but the piece is also a good, ever-needed reminder about how to report responsibly about suicide.
Aaaand the Onion with the grisliest yet most perfect take, as always
I would also like to take a sec and re-up this 2020 BuzzFeed News piece — Here Are 20 Headlines Comparing Meghan Markle To Kate Middleton That May Show Why She And Prince Harry Left Royal Life — from Ellie Hall, which you probably recognize because Oprah **literally** referenced and displayed screenshots from this during the Sunday interview!
This is the piece that definitively proved how the British press used a double standard when covering both women, and if you’re somehow not one of the nine million readers who’ve seen it already, now is the time. (Not to make this Screenshot Week in Deez Links, but it’s truly a master class in the art of journalistic screenshotting!!)
